Gary began his painting career at just 16, starting with a local company, Dansby Decorating, where he completed his apprenticeship. He remains grateful to Colin and Karen Dansby for the opportunity that laid the foundation for his trade. After a brief partnership, Gary ventured out on his own, driven by his training and passion for the craft.

In 2003, he met Sue, who would later become both his wife and business partner—a turning point that helped shape the future of GDPD. Gary officially founded Gary Dyer Painters and Decorators Ltd in 2010, and under his leadership, the company has grown into a quality-driven firm known throughout the Manawatū region for its craftsmanship, professionalism, and strong community ties.

Gary continues to find deep satisfaction in his trade, especially in seeing the transformation that colour brings to a space. He believes colour has the power to create mood, intimacy, and warmth—values reflected in every project GDPD undertakes.

Yes he is still on the tools.

Qualified Tradesman

I love what I do. Painting and decorating is a skill-based profession that constantly evolves—there’s always something new to learn, whether it’s mastering colour schemes, understanding materials, or staying up to date with the latest products. It’s a career that offers stability, variety, and a surprising sense of wellbeing. Working across different locations and on diverse projects keeps things fresh and rewarding.

But what makes it truly fulfilling is the impact: we help transform houses into homes, adding beauty and comfort that brings joy to our clients. That’s the real reward.

From the first brush stroke to the final touch, it’s fulfilling to help create spaces that feel warm, welcoming, and uniquely personal to each client.
